Frequently Asked Questions

How is Goldenwest different from other clubs?

Goldenwest has delivered more results in the 11 years of existence than many long established clubs. The vast majority of our athletes play volleyball at their High Schools through their senior season and many athletes continue on to play in college (see the alumni section of the webpage). As our club continues to grow we strive to be the regions leader in innovation and positive change for junior volleyball. Our coaches are among the best in California and the Nation (see our Staff Bios for more information). Our Staff consists of several former or current college coaches, former collegiate volleyball players, and numerous local high school coaches. Goldenwest Volleyball Club has consistently been on the cutting edge of complete athletic training. Goldenwest also provides many of our teams with assistant coaches to help train and run practices. This provides more one-on-one time so that coaches can coach - not just run drills, and allows the coaches to maximize training time with a lower player to coach ratio.

What has Goldenwest accomplished?

Teams' Achievements:
In 11 years, we have delivered gold, silver, and bronze medals to several of our teams in different age brackets. We have competed in the 3 main National Tournaments: Volleyball Festival, The Junior National Championships, and the SCVA Summer Soiree. In our 11 years of existence, we have 2 Golds, 3 Silvers, 3 Bronzes, two Junior Olympic MVPs and over 16 Junior Olympic All-Americans. This past season Goldenwest 14-Asics qualified in the Open Division to compete with the best 28 teams in the country, while our 16-Asics team won the Gold in the SCVA Summer Sioree.

Our club is nationally recognized by college coaches as a club that produces solid players in skill, attitude, and leadership. We have had tremendous success securing scholarships for our players at all levels of collegiate competition. Currently we have former players competing at UCLA, Pepperdine, Duke, Northwestern, Cal State Fullerton, Pace University, UNLV, University of Rhode Island, UC Santa Barbara and many others. This past season, 9 of the 11 seniors that played on our 18-Asics squad received scholarships to play in college.

My Daughter Plays another sport, is that a problem?

Not a problem. A number of multi-sport athletes play at Goldenwest, especially in the younger age groups. We do encourage our athletes to communicate with coaches in regard to their schedule so that we can make adjustments so all players can attend practices regularly.

How many teams does Goldenwest have?

It always depends on the number of athletes who try out for the club. Since moving to a large facility, we can field multiple teams in 18s, 17s, 16s, 15s, 14's, 13's and 12s, with the goal of having them qualifying for Junior Olympics. When we have enough athletes to form a competitive team, we will add to that division.

Where do teams practice?

The home gym for Golden West Volleyball Club is The American Sports Center. Our club offices are located here giving us a great opportunity to provide great facilities with the best practice schedule of any club in Southern California. Having one location to call "home" enhances our ability to offer a consistent, high quality program; to facilitate communication with all facets of the club; to have the older players mentor and serve as role models for younger players; and to foster a sense of community among all the players' families. This season we have added additional facilities such as Fullerton College and Canyon High School to give more flexibility in scheduling and costs.

How much do teams practice?

Our Elite Teams in all age divisions will all practice approximately three times per week, for a total of 8-10 hours per week (depending on the team). This includes court time and work outs (speed, agility and quickness training).

All other teams practice two or three times (depending on the competition schedule), for a total of 6 to 8 hours per week (depending on the team). This includes court time and occasional speed, agility and quickness training.

What days do teams practice?

The exact days and times vary from team to team. We post a schedule on our web site for players & parents alike to have ample time to work with our schedule. In past seasons we have practiced either 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm or 7:00 pm to 9:00pm (these times are weekday times and times may vary). We pride ourselves on having monthly, updated practice schedules that are viewable well ahead of time so that everyone involved knows exactly when and where we practice.

How long is the season?

The practice season is approximately 24 weeks long. Team competition in the Southern California Volleyball Association begins in January and finishs at the SCVA Regionals by the first week of June. Teams that qualify for Junior Olympic competition will train for an additional 2 weeks and play 1 week of Junior Olympic tournament.

We will send teams to the Junior Olympics through qualification or they will participate in either Volleyball Festival or the SCVA Summer Soiree.

What does it cost?

Each team's dues depend primarily on the amount of practice time the team has, both per week and over the season. The calculation also considers the coaches of the team and the number of players we expect to have on the team. Dues are comparable to other nationally competitive clubs around the country when the amount of training time is considered. TRAVEL EXPENSES ARE ADDITIONAL.

The club dues for the top 2 teams in each age division is approximately. $2400. In addition, these teams will travel to a Junior National Qualifier, Junior Nationals, the Volleyball Festival or SCVA Summer Sioree at an additional cost. The club dues for all teams includes the agility and speed training they will receive outside of regular practice time.

All dues for other teams in each division cost approximately. $2200

Optionally, qualifying teams can travel to Junior Nationals or the Volleyball Festival at an additional cost (approx. 1300).

What value do I get for my money?

Goldenwest dues are all inclusive, except for travel expenses. Dues include:

  • facilities fees
  • coaching fees
  • USAV and SCVA registrations
  • uniforms, including game uniforms, warm-ups, spandex, kneepads, & club bag
  • online payment account set up
  • SCVA tournament entry fees
  • administrative expenses & equipment

  • Teams can optionally travel to tournaments outside of Southern California Region for competition. Expenses for these trips are extra.

How do you pay for it?

There is a payment plan designed to make the payment of dues easier for the majority of our members. Parents and players will receive specific information on dues, payment plans and fund raising opportunities at the Meet Your Coach Night after tryouts are completed and teams are formed. We will be providing the ability to make on-line payments.
