Dave Huber entered this past girls volleyball season having accomplished quite a bit in four years as head coach of Los Alamitos High. He had guided the Griffins to Sunset League championships and as far as the finals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Huber had not been able to coach Los Alamitos to a CIF championship however. But he did that on Nov. 18 when the Griffins swept Newport Harbor to win the Division I-AA title at Cypress College.

For his work, Huber was named Press-Telegram Dream Team Coach of the Year.

Huber was asked recently what winning his first CIF title meant to him. He deflected much of the credit in other directions.

"More than anything, it's a credit to how hard everybody has worked the last four months," said Huber, who was named CIF Coach of the Year in the division. "It doesn't really matter what myself or any other coaches say; if the girls don't buy in, we can't accomplish anything.

"So it's good to know that a team came together and did all the little things you asked them to to kind of reach that common goal."

The Griffins went 38-5. They entered the playoffs as the No.2 seed in the division and proceeded to defeat Palos Verdes, Louisville, Thousand Oaks and Dos Pueblos ahead of their championship-match victory over league rival Newport Harbor.

Oh, and Los Alamitos did not lose one set during that championship run, sweeping all five opponents.

Sure, Huber had good players. But this was not a tall team and winning the title in Division I-AA without a lot of height is even more impressive. It's all by design.

"Really we are just trying to have well-rounded volleyball players so we kind of have the versatility to do a lot of different things, whether we need to or not," Huber said. "At some point in the year, you're going to have to mix things up."

As for this award, the normally reserved Huber cracked a smile.

"It's nice," he said. "It means we won. The girls did something.

"I'm not going to be up here if they're not working their butts off."

Dana Brown, Setter, Mayfair, Sr.: Brown helped the Monsoons to the quarterfinals of the Division III-A playoffs before losing to eventual champion Chadwick. She was named Named first-team All-CIF in Division and Co-MVP of the Suburban League.

Heather Eggers, Libero, Lakewood, Sr.: Lancers coach Michael Wadley refers to Eggers as the best libero in the greater Long Beach area. She was named first-team All-Moore League and is being recruited by Division I colleges.

Megan Kruidhof, OH, Lakewood, Freshman: It's not too often a ninth-grader plays as well as Kruidhof did for coach Michael Wadley's Lancers. But Kruidhof was indeed Lakewood's best hitter. She was named first-team All-Moore League.
