Goldenwest Players Make Impact at High Performance Tournament

Three members of Goldenwest’s 14-Asics team, (pictured from left: Skyler Flynn, Taylor Wheatley & Kaitlyn Gibbons) continued their 2010 season by making the Southern California High Performance Team. Under the arm of USA Volleyball, the Regional High Performance Program brings National-level training and competition to the regional level while allowing for top regional athletes to enter the USA Athlete Pipeline and compete for spots on National-level Teams. Try-outs were held in the spring and two Regional teams were announced; the three GW players made the Southern California Select Red Team.

For five days in July, Flynn, Gibbons and Wheatley trained at ASC with their new teammates – some of whom they battled during the regular Club season – after which they headed to Wisconsin for six days for the USAV High Performance Championship. While playing in “the Dome” in Wisconsin Dells, competition in their division included teams from Hawaii, Michigan, Puerto Rico, New York, Texas and the US National Team, to name a few. So Cal Select Red successfully advanced out of pool play and into the gold medal bracket. Making it to the Gold Medal Game, they faced the host team, the Badger Region, from Wisconsin. Down 0-2, So Cal Select Red battled back, winning the next two games and forcing a 5th game. It was a hard-fought and exciting final game, but the Badgers came out ahead 16-14.

As members of So Cal Select Red, Kaitlyn, Skyler and Taylor proudly accepted their silver medals and brought them home to Orange County! They were the only Southern California High Performance Team to medal; it was quite an accomplishment and a great way to end their 2010 volleyball season!
